bob marley and the upsetters – mr music part 1, part 2 (pressure sounds 2014)
Ah… Bob Marley and Lee “Scratch” Perry. A combination that brought out some of the best in both of them. It’s no secret that Marley recorded early versions of a lot of his later hits while working with Perry in 1969/1970. UK label Pressure Sounds has been steadily mining Perry’s endless archives, resulting in a lot of worthwhile stuff. This year sees the release of two Marley & Perry demo recordings on heavyweight 45 – check out the ur-version of “Rainbow Country” above.
Slightly related: one of my favorite non-fiction and essay writers published a piece on the birth of ska earlier this week. John Jeremiah Sullivan, take a bow for yet another piece of personal explorative music writing. And read his book if you haven’t already!
