[mix] Fairlights, Mallets and Bamboo

October 19, 2012

va – fairlights, mallets and bamboo, a mix by spencer doran (2010) (alt dl)

This mix has been a constant companion during my 3-hour commute for the past few weeks. Originally made for Root Strata in 2010, I stumbled across it by chance. I’m glad I did. Spencer Doran is a musician from Portland, but I know him as a fellow music lover trough the ubiquitous Waxidermy. For long-time readers: yes, his name does sound familiar.

Fairlights, Mallets and Bamboo” focusses on “Fourth-world undercurrents in Japanese ambient and pop music, years 1980-1986.” I don’t know about you, but I’m not knowledgeable in this area. No worries – the perfect primer is here. Get aboard this 65-minute beatless landscape made up of gently changing textures, ambient noise and meandering melodies. Thanks to Spencer for letting me (re)feature this!
