Completion of Star Time expected in 2017

December 16, 2011

star time with the dark city sisters volume 3 (emi lp 1967) album

I discovered the Dark City Sisters when I came across one of the four volumes of “Star Time with the Dark City Sisters” in 2008, and was recently lucky enough to find another installment – at this rate it’ll be 2017 before the set is complete!

Luckily that won’t matter, because the Sisters’ four-voiced-harmonies or mbaqanga are pretty timeless. Info on their career is pretty sparse; this is what I’ve been able to scrape together: hailing from South Africa, they formed in Johannesburg in the fifties and their popularity peaked in the sixties. On most of their records the music came courtesy of a band called Alexandria Black Mambazo. Their records were pressed in London, Lagos and  Nairobi and they topped the charts in Malawi, Zambia, Zimbabwe and South Africa. They appear to have re-formed in the nineties, but no solid evidence exists.

The music is still here though, and it’s glorious.

Thanks a lot for this one. I’m also a DCS collector of sorts. As you probably know, you can find volume 1 and half of volume 4 on the net. But this volume 3 includes a lot of songs you won’t find anywhere else. Happy New Year!
