(Never) Coming Back

shirley nanette – give and take (taken from “never coming back”, satara lp 1973)
shirley nanette – all of your life (taken from “never coming back”, satara lp 1973)

Sometimes this whole record-collecting thing throws me for a loop: this vocal jazz album was unknown/undiscovered until earlier this year. While tales of hundreds of copies of certain titles turning up decades after the fact are pretty common(!), usually the record in question is known… and Shirley Nanette wasn’t.

Released on the tiny Satara label, “Never coming back” consists of ten original compositions performed in a sparse and sometimes funky jazz setting. Check out two of my favorite tracks above, and imagine my excitement on opening a copy sealed for 38 years.

Same shiver I got on hearing Eloise Laws’ “Love goes deeper than that”. Thanks so much for this.
