joâo gilberto – chega de saudade (odeon brazil lp, 1959) album

Early bossa nova always cheers me up: the songs are short, manage to mix the upbeat with the melancholic and are full of the defiance characteristic of a fresh musical form. This album by singer/guitar player/composer João Gilberto ticks all those boxes, and is regarded as one of the first true bossa albums. “Chega de Saudade” means something along the lines of “enough longing” – something the cover picture seems to confirm.

Want more early bossa? Check out the 1959 street recordings by Luiz Bonfa I posted back in february.
