horace andy – dance hall style (wackies lp 1982) album

I’ve featured the Jamaican singer Horace Andy on my blog before, but this is the first time the man also known as Sleepy is here with a full album. “Dance Hall Style” was recorded in New York in 1982  for the mighty Wackies label, and is one of his best.

While Andy has released a lot of albums, there are only a few that match him with songs and producers that allow him to shine – a common occurrence in the Jamaican music industry. His debut, Skylarking, is his first great album; no collection should be without it in my opinion. The second is the obscure, but mercifully reissued In the light. The third and last is the album posted at the top of this post.

Together, the three albums offer all Andy has to offer: Skylarking is soulful and energetic, In the light is spiritual and experimental, and “Dance Hall Style” has a mature Andy singing about women, money, trust and other issues over really heavy riddims. Try the third one and search out the others if you’re so inclined- Sleepy deserves it.
