Come see about me

don covay & the goodtimers – mercy! (atlantic 8104 lp, 1965) album

Mercy!” is the debut album by singer and composer Don Covay. Released on the Atlantic label, it ticks all the boxes for a great soul lp: the singer writes his own songs, is the son of a preacherman [sic] and is backed by a great band (featuring a young Jimi Hendrix on guitar!). Most importantly, Don Covay bares his soul on all of the twelve tracks – doesn’t matter if it’s a ballad or an uptempo shouter.

So how good is “Mercy“? Very. To these ears, it’s up there with the Purifys, Little Ann, Otis Redding or Barbara Lynn. Since writing about proper soul music is not unlike trying to fry an egg in a cold pan, i’ll leave it at that – Enjoy!
